Moon pattern making

The Problem

The garment not only as a functional object, but as a language capable of transmitting ideas, emotions, and visual references — an investigation into how sculptural form and conceptual depth can make a garment worth keeping.

Your Process

The creative process began with visual and conceptual research centred on the moon as both symbolic and formal element. The goal: to translate into fashion the sense of volume, mystery, and organicity that characterises the lunar universe. A conceptual moodboard was developed combining images of lunar surfaces, sculptural references, spherical silhouettes, and natural elements — establishing a dialogue between the cosmic and the terrestrial.
The moon was studied not only through its circular form, but through its texture, its capacity to reflect light, and its changing appearance. From this came the idea of an enveloping, architectural silhouette inspired by celestial bodies and the sense of suspension they generate in space.
Initial sketches explored proportions and volumes. A patternmaking approach based on curved modules generates a globe effect across the full garment. Boning incorporated into each seam was established from the start as the fundamental technical resource — to maintain structure and reinforce the sculptural character of the design.
The choice of material formed an essential part of the conceptual process. 100% natural hemp was selected for its organic texture, body, and firmness. But also because it creates a contrast embedded in the concept itself: lunar inspiration meets a completely terrestrial material. Nature, sustainability, and formal experimentation in the same piece.
SYSTEM FRAME CORE — C5: most garments are discarded before they wear out ACTORS: emerging designers · fashion students · wearers · fabric producers · fashion educators STRUCTURAL FORCES: fast fashion cycles make disposability the default; garments are designed without a story worth keeping; construction logic prioritises speed over meaning LEVERAGE: conceptual and sculptural design as a route to emotional attachment — a garment that carries meaning becomes a garment worth keeping

Learnings

NAME: Patronaje Lunar
PROMISE: A dress can carry the geometry and sensation of a celestial body — a garment that transmits ideas, emotions, and visual references beyond its functional role.
PRINCIPLE: Volume is not decoration. It is the structure.
Short globe-silhouette dress. 3 cuts front and back. Raglan short sleeve. Boning in every seam — the seam is the skeleton.

Results

A piece that transcends the traditional function of the garment. Design and sculpture in constant dialogue — exploring the relationship between body, space, and volume.
